Drink Different – Mapping Your Mouth: A Winemaker’s Guide to Actually Feeling Wine

A WINEMAKERS GUIDE TO ACTUALLY FEELING WINE
Most people think wine is complicated because they don’t know enough.
Truth is wine is only complicated because no one ever taught you the map of your own mouth.

A French winemaker once told me this:
If people understood where taste and texture actually happen, wine would unlock instantly.

No jargon.
No performance.

Just your senses doing what they’ve always done.So here’s your roadmap, Black Elephant style.
🍷 The real landmarks of taste
Forget the pineapple, leather, cigar box and unicorn dust.
Wine comes down to four things:
Acidity

• Shows up on the sides of your tongue
• Feels like citrus giving you a quick wake-up slap
• Fresh. Bright. Electric. Sweetness
• Lives right on the tip of your tongue
• The very first thing you notice Bitterness
• Hangs out at the back of your mouth
• Slow. Firm. Lingering. Tannins
• Not a flavour — a feeling
• Like strong tea gently drying your gums
• More handshake than tasteOnce you know these places, wine starts speaking clearly.
🧪 Two-minute home experiments (no wine required)
Try this tonight: Acidity test
Sip lemon water or unsweetened yoghurt.
That sharp pull on the sides of your tongue?
That’s acidity. Tannin test
Sip strong, unsweetened tea.
That slight dryness on your gums?
That’s tannin — the backbone of red wine. Once your brain recognises these sensations, it finally knows what to look for in the glass.
🧠 Stop playing detective
Wine gets hard when people think they need to find twenty aromas and three metaphors in every sip. Instead, ask yourself just three things:

• Is the wine pulling sharply on the sides of my tongue? (acidity)
• Does my mouth feel dry afterward? (tannins)
• Does it move lightly or heavily across my tongue? (body) That’s it. Structure.Texture.

Weight. The real language of wine — the one your mouth already knows.
🥛 Body — the fridge trick that changes everything
Instead of overthinking “body”, just open your fridge:

Skim milk → light-bodied wine
Quick. Clean. Gone.

Heavy cream → full-bodied wine
Rich. Slow. Coats your tongue. It’s not about flavour.

It’s about weight.
✨ The magic moment
Practice this for a few evenings.
Then go back to a wine you once thought you “didn’t understand”.
Most people suddenly notice lift, grip, flow, weight things they never felt before.
Not because they became experts.
But because they finally let their senses lead.
🤩 You can taste !!
You don’t need a sommelier badge to understand wine.
You just need a map and the willingness to taste slowly.

At Black Elephant, we believe wine is for everyone. Not for gatekeepers.
Not for scorecards. For people.

For connection.For moments that matter.
And all of that starts with trusting your own mouth.

Cheers
